Thumb Up! 2008 Trail Rehabilitation Project Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Report Post to a Moderator       IP Information Go to the top of this page

Members & trail users,

Your TSC Board of Directors has been busy trying to secure funding to aid us in for some greatly needed trail rehabilitation at our Mac Mills trail network. We are pleased to announce that the Thousand Islands Community Development Corporation (TICDC) has granted us money towards this worthy initiative.

The initial repairs will be focused on the trails closest to the Chalet (Novice Valley, Alternate, Chicken Run, Home Trail, Snowshoe Trail, etc). We are planning on filling in the ruts & holes with appropriate fill and installing culverts to manage run off on a more permanent basis. The intent is to make these trails 'safer' once again for use by our members (especially our younger and older members).

The full scope of the project needs to be worked out, but one thing for certain is that we will need numerous volunteers to help us with this ambitious project!! We are looking at hiring a contractor for some of the larger aspects of the project but we will still need 'sturdy backs' to plan, rake, dig, wheelbarrow, etc to ensure its' success.

I will be updating this forum periodically, especially once we determine dates, for requests of help from our ski club friends.

Please keep checking back and let your friends know that their volunteer help will be needed to ensure the success of this worthwhile project.

Regards,
TSC Executive

Happy Spring!

Your TSC executive wanted to let you know that we have made some strides in the past few weeks with respect to the Mac Mills Restoration Project.

The club was successfull in being selected as a recepient for funding by the TICDC. Our proposal was accepted and now the real work begins. We are awaiting the contract and further instructions from TICDC on how the TSC can begin to utilize the proceeds.

Gilles, Alf & I have scouted between 8 & 10 problem areas on the inner loop trail system. We have mapped & photographed the areas and these will be the focus of restoration. The intent is to have the inner loop "Green" trails in excellent shape for the upcoming season.

Our next step is having a local contractor come out to give us estimates on a time & material for the project. This will give us some guidance as to how much we can realistically get done with our budget.

Initial thoughts are that we would have the contractor do some of the larger mechanical tasks (ditch digging, large fill, etc) and club members focus on labour intensive efforts (wheelbarrow, levelling, etc). Once again, this will be dependant on the quotes we receive. We are trying to maximize the benefit to the club from these proceeds and if that means a bit more labour from members, then that's the path we'll take.

I'll update you in a week or two after we have had our discussions with the contractor.

Cheers,
Rob

Members & Trail Users,

Just wanted to pass along an update with respect to this project.

Alf & I met yesterday with a representative from Tackaberrys to scope out the material and labour that is going to be required to get the project completed. He has committed to get us an estimate of what we are looking at in terms of $$. Once we get this estimate, we will have a better idea of whether it's feasible to get all the spots fixed that we have identified or whether we are going to have to scale back our plans. Ideally, we can get the major areas fixed and then the call for volunteers will go out to work on the minor areas. We need a sustained period of dry weather before we can get machines on the trails so let's hope for less rain!

I'll post another note once we hear back from Tackaberry.

Happy Trails,
Rob

Thumb Up! Final Project Summary Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Report Post to a Moderator       IP Information Go to the top of this page

Fellow members and trail users,

We successfully completed our project late last fall and just submitted our final report to the Thousand Islands Community Development Corporation (TICDC). A number of volunteers helped execute the project and we’ve included a few "before and after" pictures to highlight the impact of our work. We were able to complete repairs to Chicken run, Home Trail, Alternate and Novice Valley. The results are impressive this winter!

Thanks to those who helped and to the TICDC for supporting our Trails Rehabilitation project.

Regards,
TSC Executive
